Shiau Jon Jen was born in Zhanghu, Taiwan in 1954. He graduated from the National Taiwan College of the Arts in Taiwan in 1977. He entered the Department of Plastic Arts at the Paris Eighth University in Paris in 1986. He traveled to Paris and after returning, he served as artistic director in Chin Pao-San and the Yuzi Paradise project in Guilin. He joined the French Artists’ Association in 1987. In 2008, he became a Visiting Professor of wood sculpture at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing, China.

His “My Forest” series were created during his early arrival in France when he knew no one there. They were inspired by his “beautiful memories of Taiwan” that he reflected on when he had first arrived in a new environment where he knew no one and did not speak the language. From that series, he moved on to express the more spatial aspects of the materials rather than their emotional or sentimental meanings. His most current pieces are more "linear" type of work and has become a central thematic aspect.
